Cementing Talk by Schlumberger

Prepare. Isolate. Verify. Three very simple tasks to be said, three very challenging jobs to be accomplished.

The latter 2 sentences sum up greatly the talk on Fundamental Cementing Design and Techniques presented by Mr. Carl Johnson (Schlumberger Regional Well Integrity Domain) that took place yesterday at School of Chemical and Process Engineering (Leeds). The Society of Petroleum Engineers Leeds Student Chapter was extremely grateful to host this talk given by a company that seems to come up with more and more innovative solutions exceeding its previous accomplishments both technically and amusingly when the audience is left speechless by the presented state of art technology. In this case, the CemCRETE, concrete-based oilwell cementing technology proved the previous statement.

Moreover, we shall thank Thomas Ilett (Schlumberger Recruitment Sector) for explaining students about their perspectives and their chance to become part of Schlumberger’s team and, of course, Karina Padilla (Europe’s and North Africa’s University Communications Sector for Schlumberger) for ensuring flawless communication with the SPE Leeds Chapter and SCAPE of University of Leeds.

Likewise, we shall thank those students who attended and were interested to reach beyond their horizons of curiosity and to explore the vast amount of services that Schlumberger provides and to gain a flavour how challenging and demanding engineering roles are.

In a nutshell, this Cementing event was a great way how to gain an insight in one of the most important jobs during well operations but at the same time share a laugh with members of SPE Leeds Student Chapter and, of course, with the prominent guests Mr. Carl Johnson and Mr. Thomas Ilett.

We are extremely encouraged to continue the partnership with Schlumberger and host them yet again quite soon!

Just to end by paraphrasing Mr. Carl Johnson on the importance and meticulousness of Cementing: “Seems easy to carry out cementing, right? Not so fast, it sounds easy, yet it takes incredible amount of work to achieve satisfying results!”

Yours SPE Leeds Student Chapter
